University Account Descriptions

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) provides services to the campus and each service is required to have a login account. Many services share login accounts. Below is a listing by service and then by account to explain which account you use with each service.

Default accounts can be acquired by visiting the University Computing Accounts web page, selecting New Account Requests, then selecting Activate Your Default Accounts. Accounts labeled as default below share the same user name, but passwords are not synchronized automatically.

Default Services

iSpartan:

  • Who: Faculty/Staff/Students receive iSpartan accounts (also commonly referred to as Gmail) for email and calendaring at UNCG. These email addresses are in the format: username@uncg.edu.
  • Account:  iSpartan uses the iSpartan ID (Canvas, email and other online services).
  • Access:  Via the Web at ispartan.uncg.edu.
  • All faculty, staff, and students may use iSpartan for Google services such as "Sites" and "Docs." Google Sites is the recommended tool for creating personal web pages.
  • For technical support (including providing answers to usability and "how to" questions) go to the Google Apps Help Center. For questions about account creation and maintenance, contact 6-TECH at (336) 256-TECH (8324) or 6-TECH@uncg.edu.

Canvas:

  • Who: Canvas accounts are created for all students, faculty, and staff
    Individuals are automatically added to the roster for enrolled courses.
  • Account: Canvas uses the iSpartan ID (Canvas, email and other online services).
  • Access:  Via the Web at canvas.uncg.edu.

General Computing Network (GCN) File Space:

  • Who: Faculty/staff/students receive 5 gigabytes of General Computing Network (GCN) storage space. The file space is secured in the UNCG data centers and is backed up nightly. Checkpoints are done at scheduled intervals, which allow clients to manage the restoration of files in the event of corruption or deletion.
  • Account: GCN File Space uses the GCN Network and Campus AD (campus.uncg.edu) Domain.
  • Access:  From all GCN Windows workstations, including ITS lab computers, SSLVPN portal, SFTP for GCN Access, and Mac computers connected to the non-NAP GCN. In addition, faculty/staff may use virtual.uncg.edu from any internet location.

Instructional Linux Environment (ILE)

  • Who: Faculty/staff/students are given accounts to access a general linux login service which allows access to various software packages, such as the statistical packages SAS, SPSS and MATLAB.  Software compilers are also available in this environment. For a list of available software, refer to Linux Software @ UNCG. Each user is given 5 gigabytes of space in the ILE environment.
  • Account: GCN File Space uses the iSpartan ID (Canvas, email and other online services).
  • Access:  Via a terminal emulator via SSH to linux.uncg.edu.

WebEx

  • Who: Faculty/staff/students are eligible for UNCG WebEx accounts. UNCG has two WebEx environments - a faculty/staff environment (opt-in), and a student environment (automatic enrollment). Faculty and staff may opt-in at http://getmywebex.uncg.edu. The faculty/staff environment provides full access to WebEx Training Center and WebEx Meeting Center. The student environment provides access to a small-scale version of Meeting Center.
  • Account: WebEx uses the iSpartan ID (Canvas, email and other online services).
  • Access:  Via the web at http://webex-facstaff.uncg.edu or http://webex-students.uncg.edu.


UNCG Login Accounts

iSpartan ID (Canvas, email, and other online services):

  • These accounts are used to authenticate to many services, including Canvas and iSpartan.
  • Who: Faculty/Staff/Students receive accounts for Enterprise Authentication.
  • Access:  Via Canvas, iSpartan, and web applications, including those using Shibboleth.

GCN and Campus AD (campus.uncg.edu) Domain:

  • Used for logging into workstations connected to the GCN.
  • Who: Faculty/Staff/Students.
  • Access: Connecting to GCN workstations and servers that are part of the campus.uncg.edu Active Directory domain.

ISP Network and ISP AD (isp.uncg.edu) Domain:

  • Used for logging into workstations connected to the ISP network.
  • Who: Faculty/Staff/Students.
  • Access: Connecting to ISP Network workstations that are part of the isp.uncg.edu Active Directory domain.

UNIX Service (Instructional Linux Environment):

  • UNIX Service accounts are used to gain access to various software packages available on UNIX, such as the statistical packages SAS, SPSS and MATLAB.
  • UNIX Service accounts are required for access to publishing or maintaining departmental Web pages on www.uncg.edu.
  • Who: Faculty/Staff/Students.
  • Access: Connecting to UNIX Services via terminal emulator software or SFTP.

Banner/ODS Accounts

The Banner Information System contains menus and forms (screens) that allow authorized users to inquire on and maintain information about anyone affiliated with UNCG as a prospect, applicant, student, faculty member, staff member, or alumnus. Security permits different users to see and update specific information as is appropriate for their job at UNCG.
