University Account Descriptions
There are many different kinds of computer accounts at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). Here is a list of accounts and who needs them.
Default Accounts
NOTE: While the default accounts all share the same user name, the passwords are not synchronized automatically.
Novell or NDS (Novell Directory Services):
- Novell accounts are required for access to file storage and software on the network.
- Students must have Novell accounts to use the computers in the labs.
- Faculty and staff must have Novell accounts to store files and use software on the network.
UNCG Domain ADS (Windows Active Directory):
- Used for connecting to any networked Microsoft Windows server on campus.
- When faculty and staff members log into university owned machines in non-lab spaces, they log into the Novell system and into the computer itself. This typically happens as one act due to synchronized passwords. All Windows based workstations are being configured so that users can utilize their Windows Active Directory account to log into the workstations.
- Faculty, staff, and graduate students needing access to a Web site on web.uncg.edu or web-d.uncg.edu.
UNIX:
- UNIX accounts are required to produce personal Web pages and for access to publishing or maintaining departmental Web pages.
- Various software packages are available on UNIX, such as the statistical packages SAS and SPSS.
- There is some specialty math software, such as MATLAB.
- UNIX accounts have a UNIX password.
e-Spartan:
- e-Spartan accounts (also commonly referred to as Lotus Accounts) are required for email at UNCG. Email accounts at UNCG have the address @uncg.edu. e-Spartan can be accessed via the Web at e-spartan.uncg.edu.
- The e-Spartan uses the Novell user name & password.
- Faculty and staff members of the UNCG client community can also use their e-Spartan account and the Lotus Desktop Client to manage mail and calendar related work. For more information, visit the Email Support documents.
Blackboard:
- Blackboard accounts are created for all students who are enrolled in courses that use Blackboard for online components of the class.
- Blackboard uses the Novell user name and password.
Other Accounts
Banner:
- The Banner Information System contains menus and forms (screens) that allow authorized users to inquire on and maintain information about anyone affiliated with UNCG as a prospect, applicant, student, faculty member, staff member, or alumnus. Security permits different users to see and update specific information as is appropriate for their job at UNCG.
Administrative Departments: Staff in administrative departments that use the Banner Information System should check with their department head or supervisor to see if they need this account. For more information, please visit the New Banner Web site. - Academic Departments: All departmental support staff who have contact with students as well as those faculty involved in Graduate Admissions for their department should obtain Banner accounts. Faculty can obtain information such as class rosters and some basic student information via UNCGenie Web for faculty using their university ID and university PIN numbers, without having a Banner Account. For information about faculty use of Banner and UNCGenie, go to the UNCG Faculty Information page.
- If you are not sure if you need a Banner account or want more information, contact 6-TECH Technical Support 336-256-TECH(8324).
VMS (Virtual Memory System):
You will only need a VMS account if you are using any of the following applications:
- FRS (Financial Record System)
- FRS Inquiry
- HRS (Human Resource Services)
- Purchasing Requisitions
