The goal of Database Hosting is to provide the infrastructure required to support business applications for your organization in a highly available environment, ensure data integrity and security, as well as appropriate levels of availability and recoverability.
Information Technology Services (ITS) supports three types of databases:
Database | Hosted on: |
---|---|
Oracle | Linux virtual servers |
Microsoft SQL Server | Windows cluster |
MySQL | Linux/Apache LAMP environment |
At UNCG, both Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases are managed by ITS, while MySQL databases are created and managed by web developers in a department or School.
For more information about MySQL databases on UNCG’s LAMP environment, see LAMP @ UNCG.
ITS will host Oracle databases on Linux virtual servers for vendor written applications. This service must be initiated as part of a project request. (See steps to request a project in the "Microsoft SQL Database Hosting" section below.)
Oracle databases are hosted on a virtual server as a more cost-effective solution than a stand-alone physical server. However, your specific needs may demand a physical server for your database. This will be determined during consultations with ITS as part of the project process.
ITS hosts Microsoft SQL Server databases on an ITS-hosted Virtual Server for vendor-written and client-developed applications. For details on SQL Server hosting, including costs, see Microsoft SQL Server Service Description.
ITS will provide support for problems that users may encounter with the core database management system hosting a Microsoft SQL Server database. This includes assistance with software maintenance, backup/recovery, monitoring, security, non-production refreshes and similar tasks typically associated with the database administration role. The level of support will vary according to the database management method. However, users of the service are responsible for providing the development expertise required to make use of their database.
If an application has multiple tiers (production, validation), clients may request a refresh of validation database by contacting 6-TECH at (336) 256-TECH (8324) or 6-TECH@uncg.edu.
