Laptop Security

Protecting your laptop physically and operationally are of the upmost importance. The information below outlines ways to keep your laptop safe.

Theft Prevention and Response

UNCG strives to provide a safe and friendly learning environment for its students; however, students should still exercise reasonable caution and common sense to protect their personal safety and that of their property. Your laptop represents a significant investment to you both monetarily and academically.

Here are a few helpful tips for protecting your laptop:

  • Never leave your laptop unattended.
  • Like any other valuable piece of equipment, never leave your laptop in plain sight in your car.
  • When you are working in a single location for any length of time (e.g., your residence hall room, the library, a computer lab) take a moment to secure your laptop with a security lock. A laptop security lock is available for purchase when you order your laptop.
  • Computrace® Personal is a third-party laptop recovery service available through Lenovo. You can read more about it on the Lenovo ThinkVantage Web site. It is available as an option during the laptop purchase or later through the Lenovo Web site.
  • Back up your important data frequently.

Further information about campus safety and protecting your property while at UNCG can be obtained from the Campus Police Department.

Virus Protection

Keeping your machine virus free not only protects you but everyone else on the network. By following some simple steps, you can keep your virus protection current and clean with scheduled scans. For more information, visit the Symantec Web site.

Malware Protection

Your laptop’s performance could be compromised without your knowledge through malicious software commonly referred to as Malware.  There is no single solution which will keep your laptop completely safe, but by following smart computing practices, you can help limit the likelihood that you will be compromised.
