Laptop Security

Protecting your laptop physically and operationally are of the upmost importance. The information below outlines ways to keep your laptop safe.

Theft Prevention and Response

UNCG strives to provide a safe and friendly learning environment for its students; however, students should still exercise reasonable caution and common sense to protect their personal safety and that of their property. Your laptop represents a significant investment to you both monetarily and academically.

Here are a few helpful tips for protecting your laptop:

  • Never leave your laptop unattended.
  • Like any other valuable piece of equipment, never leave your laptop in plain sight in your car.
  • When you are working in a single location for any length of time (e.g., your residence hall room, the library, a computer lab) take a moment to secure your laptop with a security lock.
  • LoJack is a third-party laptop recovery service that you may wish to purchase.
  • Back up your important data frequently.

Further information about campus safety and protecting your property while at UNCG can be obtained from the Campus Police Department.

Virus Protection

Keeping your machine virus free not only protects you but everyone else on the network.

  • Install anti-virus software
    • Windows laptops: All Windows laptops come pre-installed with the Windows Defender anti-virus software. For more information, visit Windows Defender.
    • Mac laptops: Mac laptops do not come pre-installed with anti-virus software. Information Technology Services (ITS) recommends Sophos anti-virus software, which you can download free of charge. To download Sophos or to view other anti-virus recommendations, see Anti-Virus Recommendations for Personally-Owned Computers.
  • Keep your anti-virus software updated.
New viruses come out all the time. The anti-virus software adds updates to block the new viruses that come out. Stay protected by running your updates! The easiest way to assure you are always up to date is to allow your ant-ivirus software to check for updates on its own.

Malware Protection

Your laptop’s performance could be compromised without your knowledge through malicious software commonly referred to as Malware.  There is no single solution which will keep your laptop completely safe, but by following smart computing practices, you can help limit the likelihood that you will be compromised.
