Adding a Printer on the General Computing Network

When installing a network printer on the General Computing Network (GCN), the print drivers will be installed for you automatically. Choose the appropriate operating system for instructions:


Windows 10

  1. Click the Windows Start button (Windows icon) on the bottom left of your computer screen or press the Windows key on your keyboard.
  2. Type "control panel" and either press <Enter> or click on Control Panel in the list.

  3. In the Control Panel window, under Hardware and Sound, click View devices and printers.

  4. Near the top left corner of the Devices and Printers window, click the Add a Printer option.

  5. In the Add a device window, click "The Printer that I want isn’t listed."

  6. In the Add Printer window, select the radio button option "Find a printer in the directory, based on location or feature," then click Next.

  7. In the Find Printers window, you can search by Name or Location for the printer in your department.

  8. To install a printer, double-click the printer in the list or right-click the printer and click Select.

Windows 7

  1. On your Windows desktop, click the Start button and select Devices and Printers.

  2. In the Devices and Printers window, click Add a printer.

  3. The Add Printer Wizard window will open. Click Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer.

  4. A list of available printers will be displayed. You can scroll through the list, select your printer, then click Next.
    If you would rather search for your printer:
    • Select The printer that I want isn't listed.

    • Choose Find a printer in the directory, based on location or feature and click Next.

    • In the Name text box, type all or part of the GCN name for your department -- or type a building and/or room number in the Location text box. Add an asterisk (*) before and/or after your search term as a "wild card."
    • Click Find Now. The search results will appear at the bottom of the window.

    • Double-click your printer in the list.

      Note: If you are unable to connect to your printer or if you get an error, verify that you are attempting to connect to a valid printer and that it is online. For assistance, contact 6-TECH at 256-TECH (8324).
  5. When prompted, enter your GCN User name and Password and click OK.
  6. The printer driver will install automatically on your computer. When the process is complete, you will see a message "You've successfully added printerXYZ..." Click Next.
  7. You may click to Print a test page. Then click Finish to complete the setup. The printer will now be displayed in the Devices and Printers window.

  1. Open System Preferences and choose Printers and Scanners.
  2. Click the Add (+) button in the lower-left corner.

  3. In the search bar, starting typing your department name and you should get a list of printers related to your department.
  4. Click on the name of the printer you would like to install. In the description of that printer, you will see a Location field so you can be sure this is the printer you would like to install. The Name of the printer will show the make and model (e.g., HP=Hewlett Packard, 425=Model 425).

  5. Select the driver for the printer you are installing from the drop down menu for Use: Choose a Driver. Most black and white printers will accept the Generic PCL Driver, but we recommend that you install the correct model driver from the manufacturer. If you don't see a driver that matches your printer, then you need to search the manufacturer's website for the correct driver package. Apple supplies driver packages for certain manufacturers, such as:
  6. Once a driver has been selected, click Add.
  7. While on campus, send a test print job to any and all recently installed printers.
  8. A box will pop up asking for your Name and Password. Enter your UNCG credentials, then click the checkbox for "Remember this password in my keychain" so you won't have to put in your Name and Password each time you print.
