Upgrading the AnyConnect VPN Client

The AnyConnect VPN Client checks for updates each time you utilize the software to establish a secure connection to the UNCG General Computing Network (GCN). If the AnyConnect software is up-to-date, you will continue with the normal logon process. If the software is out-of-date, the software will be updated prior to establishing a secure connection to the GCN. This is an automated process and requires no user intervention. There is no option to decline the upgrade.

Note: The following instructions are based on the standard logon process, however, if required, the update will occur during the Start Before Logon (SBL) procedure.



Windows Upgrade

  1. Launch the AnyConnect client by clicking on the Windows Start button and selecting All Programs > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client > Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client.

  2. After launching the client you may receive a Windows prompt requesting permission to allow the Cisco Secure Desktop – Hostscan Launch Utility to make changes to your computer. Click Yes to permit this access.

  3. A logon screen will appear. Enter your UNCG Username and Password and click Connect to login to the client.

  4. A new version of software will be detected, the client will exit, and the upgrade will begin.

  5. The AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client will download and install the new software.

  6. Once the installation is complete, the secure connection will be re-established with the updated AnyConnect software.

  7. Once the connection is established, a small icon with a lock will appear in the task bar. This is the new icon for the AnyConnect software.

Mac OS X Upgrade

  1. To launch the AnyConnect client, open the Finder and navigate to Applications > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client.

  2. A logon screen will appear. Enter your UNCG Username and Password and click Connect to login to the client.



  3. A new version of software will be detected, the client will exit, and the upgrade will begin.


  4. The AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client will download and install the new software.


  5. Once the installation is complete the secure connection will be re-established with the updated AnyConnect software.


  6. Once the connection is established and small globe with a lock will appear in the application dock. This is the new icon for the AnyConnect software.
