Incoming Remote Desktop Connections to Be Blocked on UNCG's Network
20 September 2007
Who: All University affiliates who connect to on-campus computers using a remote desktop protocol (Microsoft's RDP, Apple Remote Desktop, X Windows, Citrix, etc.) from an off-campus location
What: Incoming Remote Desktop Connections will be blocked on UNCG's network after September 24th
What is changing?
After the change, a computer outside the campus network will not be able to initiate a remote desktop connection to a computer that is part of the campus network.
When is this happening?
This change will occur on September 24, 2007. After this date, incoming remote desktop connections will no longer be permitted to access the campus network. Outbound remote access connections will not be blocked.
Why is this change being made?
Direct remote desktop connections have been determined to pose a significant and unacceptable risk to the security of the campus network and University information assets. UNCG is currently seeing an elevated number of probes for this vulnerability.
What should current remote desktop users do?
Clients who require remote desktop access to on-campus computers should contact 6-TECH (6-8324) immediately to receive instructions.
