Microsoft Vista Update

03 JAN 2008

In early 2007, ITS began planning for the deployment of the Microsoft Vista operating system on campus. In May 2007, Vista was implemented on new Student Laptop Initiative Lenovo (SLI) Thinkpad models. Although the original plan was to make Vista available in the ITS computer labs in the Fall of 2008, subsequent research conducted by ITS has revealed a number of problems related to hardware, software and Novell network compatibility that make the deployment of the current release of Vista problematic in the UNCG wired network computing environment. Because of these issues, ITS has decided, in consultation with the Academic Technology Coordinating Committee (ATCC), to delay the deployment of Vista in the ITS open access computer labs until Fall 2009.

We will keep the campus updated regarding when Vista can be deployed effectively in the campus computing labs as well as campus offices. Currently, the Vista operating system is supported only for SLI laptops using the UNCG wireless network.
