Update: Dual Partition Image Release
14 November 2008
Information Technology Services (ITS) is deploying a new software image for Windows PC computers with two local drive partitions: C:\System and D:\Data. If your computer is "reimaged" (rebuilt) in the future, please note the following:
- User profiles will be located in D:\Users instead of C:\Documents and Settings.
In Windows, a user profile defines customized desktop environments, such as individual display, and network and printer connections settings.
- Your data will still be stored in My Documents, but on D:\ rather than C:\.
- Any business software you install on your computer should be installed to C:\, but your data files should be stored on D:\.
If you have a business application or program that is set to save your files to C:\, you should change the default location to a location on D:\, such as D:\USERS\USERNAME\My Documents, where "USERNAME" is your UNCG user name.
If the program will not allow you to change the default data storage location, you should back up any files relating to University business to your University network storage space (R:\) or your D:\ drive.
- As always, any data that is important should be regularly backed up to a location external to your local machine to protect against data loss from hardware failure, theft, or other situations where data may be lost or destroyed.
Note: Sensitive data must be saved directly on the University network storage device (R:\)*, rather than your local hard drive. For information about what constitutes sensitive data, read the Data Classification Policy.
*Before backing up files to (R:), ask your Departmental Liaison to check the amount of disk space that is available for your department on the network. Your Departmental Liaison will find instructions for how to do this in 6-TECH Online.
In the event that your computer is reimaged with this dual partition, the technician will be able to answer your questions regarding the change. In addition, you may contact 6-TECH at (336) 256-TECH (8324) or 6-tech@uncg.edu for additional help.
