ITS recently made changes to the UNIX environment which impacts web development at UNCG. The address, unix.uncg.edu, which used to point to the server maggie.uncg.edu, has now been pointed at a new, more robust server, genlogin1.uncg.edu. This change was made because maggie is approaching end of life and genlogin1 will provide an update to the computing resources available for UNCG's UNIX web environment. One major difference with the new environment is that FTP connections can only be made via sFTP. ITS has discovered that users using Dreamweaver CS4 are able to connect to unix.uncg.edu without issue using sFTP, however users using Dreamweaver CS3 or older are having issues. This is because SSH Protocol 2 only has been enabled on genlogin1.uncg.edu and versions of Dreamweaver prior to CS4 appear to be unable to communicate using Protocol 2. The use of SSH Protocol 1 was discontinued in this new environment due to security concerns with that protocol.

ITS is looking into the issue. In the meantime, users using a version of Dreamweaver prior to CS4 can connect to your UNIX web space using sFTP by using maggie.uncg.edu as your server address instead of unix.uncg.edu.
