Snow Leopard Bug May Cause Data Loss

15 October 2009

A bug was reported in Snow Leopard that may cause data loss. The problem occurs when users log into the local guest account, then log back into their regular account. Users may notice that all data is missing in the regular account. The home directory "Users/username" still exists, but the folder is completely empty.

The data can only be restored from a backup that the user has made, such as from an external hard drive (the information is no longer on the hard drive). Information Technology Services recommends users backup their machines regularly. Apple is aware of the issue, and is working on a solution. More information about this bug can be found in the Snow Leopard bug deletes all user data article.

As mentioned in a previous ITS article, there are several applications that will not work with Snow Leopard. There are also issues with Snow Leopard working in Active Directory. Information Technology Services suggests users wait to upgrade to Snow Leopard until all bugs have been worked out. If you purchased a machine with the latest version of the OS, please be aware of the issues.
