Cost for Off-Campus Connectivity

The Metro-Ethernet solution offers a 10Mbps or 100Mbps bandwidth, which is a much closer level of performance to what the user would experience on campus. This will allow the departments to keep their applications safe behind the campus firewall and operate at performance levels that they would see if they were still on campus. This will also allow departments to continue to perform their daily functions with minimal changes in operation procedures.

Note: The departments will still be behind the UNCG security edge filters which will provide the level of security that UNCG desires for all departments.

We have one central vendor and one solution that functions and operates the same for all of our remote sites, rather then a multitude of third party vendors with different solutions. This creates mobility between sites to allow each department to relocate to an existing remote site and continue to operate with minimal change due to the identical configuration.

Initial costs for remote site setup (One-time charge)

There may be Initial costs to setup the remote site to ensure proper infrastructure. This would include the University charge for setting up ports which cover the deployment of any switches. The initial infrastructure may need to be upgraded depending on what current infrastructure is in place in the remote building. This could include upgrading internal wiring, or connectivity to the building. There may be Interior construction costs for any alterations to the telecommunications room.

Equipment or Service Cost
Hardware $250 per port
Initial infrastructure setup Variable cost
Construction Variable cost

Fixed Charge for Metro-Ethernet (Per month)

Speed of connection Cost
10Mbps $500/month
100Mbps $900/month
100Mbps Burstable $1025/month

Variable Charge for Metro-Ethernet (Per month)

Variable monthly charges are determined by the number of remote sites ($1432/Number of remote sites).

Total number of sites Cost
With 2 sites $716/month
With 3 sites $477/month
With 4 sites $357/month
With 5 sites $286/month

Total Monthly Costs

Total monthly costs are determined by the bandwidth chosen (fixed) and the number of off-site locations (variable) utilizing the Metro-Ethernet services.

Example Cost
Site with 10Mbps and 2 off site locations $1216 ($500+$716)
Site with 100 Mbps and 4 off site locations $1257 ($900+357)
Site with 10 Mbps and 5 off site locations $786 ($500+286)

Note: Total monthly charges are evaluated every quarter and adjusted as more sites adopt the Metro-Ethernet solution.
