Security
Where does security occur?
UNCG provides several levels of security in the current network, as well as preparing additional features and networking options for the next generation of equipment being phased in over the next few years. These security technologies benefit the user workstations, the overall network itself, and protect critical UNCG services. The security levels are described below.
Top Tier
Top tier functions actively eliminate millions of security threats every day, varying from worms and exploits to recon and Malware. The security system simply eliminates these before they reach you as the user. In order to effectively run this operation, the network support team has three senior network architects, three infrastructure engineers, and an independent security office specifically dedicated to top tier security. Top tier functions are as follows:
- network design
- network perimeter
- network infrastructure components
- firewall
- IPS
- VPN
- mail protections (AV, anti-spam, anti-phishing, anti-fraud)
Mid Tier
Mid tier functions occur in a larger part of the support organization. The UNCG support desk answers calls related but not limited to workstation security (in a UNCG LAN context only). The field services division develops and delivers a pre-configured operation system image for client deployment (also in UNCG LAN context). The service operations center is constantly staffed and monitors networking and security components. Mid tier functions are as follows:
- infrastructure/service monitoring
- desktop design and build
- client AV/patches/firewall settings
Bottom Tier
Bottom tier functions occur with the users specifically. The degree of proficiency and time availability of each user has significant impact on how well security is maintained. Bottom tier functions are as follows:
- user actions
- physical security
