  1. What is Office 365?
Office 365 is the cloud-based Microsoft productivity suite that provides access to Office applications (like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote) and other productivity services. "Office Online," web-based, online versions of the Microsoft Office suite, can be accessed via web browsers at office365.uncg.edu. Office 365 subscription service also permits UNCG students, faculty and staff to download and install "Office Desktop versions," full desktop versions of the Microsoft Office suite (currently Office 2016 for Windows and Mac).

  2. Who is eligible to use Office 365?
All students, faculty and staff with active UNCG usernames and passwords.

If you have recently activated your UNCG account (within the past 24 hours), your account may not have synched to Office 365 yet. Please wait 24 hours, and if you still cannot sign in, contact 6-TECH at (336) 256-TECH (8324) or 6-TECH@uncg.edu.

  3. What Office 365 applications and services are currently available to me?
UNCG’s current implementation of Office 365 includes:
    • Office Online
Web-based, online versions of all the applications in the Microsoft Office Suite. Applications include:
      • Word Online
      • Excel Online
      • PowerPoint Online
      • OneNote Online
    • Office Desktop Versions
Full desktop versions of the Microsoft Office Suite, available to students, faculty and staff for download and installation:
      • Office 2016 (Windows)
      • Office for Mac 2016 (Macs)

New! Skype for Business is now available with the Office Desktop suite.

    • OneDrive
Web-based storage that provides every UNCG user with 1 TB of space. OneDrive will allow you to store and share Office 365 files with people both inside and outside of UNCG.

    • Delve
New Microsoft Office 365 app that presents a personalized "news feed" for each user containing content from across all Office 365 apps. Please see What is Delve for more information.
Note: Delve is a brand new service that launched on September 8th, 2014, and is not yet fully supported by ITS.

To see the full list of applications that are available for both online and full desktop use, see Office 365 ProPlus Subscription Details.

To see what services and features are not available in our current implementation of Office 365, see Office 365 @ UNCG: What is not available for UNCG users?

  4. What is the difference between the Office Online applications, available through Office 365, and the Office applications that are installed on my computer?
The Office Online applications are web-based versions of the Microsoft Office Suite of applications, whereas the Office Desktop versions are downloaded and installed onto your computer.  The Office Online apps do not have the full functionality of the Office Desktop versions.  But they do offer most of the functionality needed by our students, faculty and staff for typical use.
  5. What happens to  my Office 365 account when I graduate, or leave, UNCG?
    • Your ability to use Office 365 is linked to maintaining active an UNCG computing account. When your UNCG computing account become inactive due to loss of eligibility (ex. graduation or leave), you will no longer be able to access Office 365 or its services. For more information on computing account eligibility, please visit the Account Expiration page.
    • Graduating students can purchase a four-year subscription of Office 365 University at the UNCG Online Software Store for $79.99 prior to leaving UNCG. This subscription must be redeemed using a personal, non-university account. Alumni are ineligible.
  6. What are the browser requirements for using Office 365?
Look in the "Apps for Office in the Browser" section of Microsoft's Supported Browers page.
  7. I’ve had a Microsoft Account that uses my UNCG email address for a while now. Will that be affected?
    • Microsoft allows users to sign up for something called a “Microsoft Account” using any valid email address in the world. These are called “Consumer” (or Non-Organizational) Microsoft accounts.
    • These Consumer accounts allowed users to access a variety of Microsoft services other than Office 365 (like Outlook.com email, or the consumer OneDrive storage offering that provides 15Gb instead of the 1 terabyte that UNCG accounts provide).
    • Consumer accounts have no active reference or connection to UNCG’s Office 365 service at all.
    • You may not be able to sign in to both a Consumer Microsoft Account and a UNCG Office 365 Account at the same time.
If you experience problems because you have a Consumer Microsoft Account that uses your UNCG email address (or email alias), please contact 6-TECH.
  8. How much space do I get on my OneDrive? Can I get more?
Each UNCG user will receive 1 TB of OneDrive storage space. UNCG ITS will not be granting space increase requests.
