Oversight for UNCG Web Presence
The University Of North Carolina At Greensboro
(Approved by the Chancellor, December 24, 1996)
(Revised August 30, 1999)
(Revised January 24, 2005)
The Web has become an essential part of how UNCG does business in at least three major areas: instruction and research; student and administrative service; and relations with the public.
The University's presence on the Web serves to further the University's image with potential students, alumni, supporters, and the public. This site is equivalent to a University publication and is expected to meet appropriate standards for graphic presentation and information content. Recognizing that its publishing format is different from that of other publications, the system is expected to meet appropriate technical standards. For the University Web site, the Division of University Advancement is responsible for graphic and content standards, while the Division of Information Technology Services is responsible for technical standards and operation.
UNCG's Web presence should be managed as part of an integrated, campus-wide approach to meeting needs in all areas that use the Web. Policy development and Web management are handled as follows.
Policy development and Web management
Day-to-day management of the Web is a responsibility of Information Technology Services (technical standards and operations) and University Advancement (standards for graphics and content). Guidance for that management comes from the Web Oversight Committee named by the Vice Chancellor for Information Technology Services, with advice from the Provost and other Vice Chancellors. The Web Oversight Committee includes representatives from each major part of the University. Its duties include:
- Approving the graphical appearance and operation for the University home page and standards of appearance and management that must be met by home pages designed by departments.
- Advising the Administrative Systems Sponsors (Provost and Vice Chancellors) on issues related to the University Web site and proposing any policies and procedures that should be considered relating to the University home page.
- Providing oversight for University Advancement staff's review and monitoring of University-wide pages to ensure that guidelines and standards are met and that information is current.
- Maintaining a list of departmental representatives responsible for the content and design of any pages and receiving an annual statement of assurance from the representative that all information has been reviewed and is current and compliant.
- Providing oversight for Information Technology Services staff on technical standards.
- Helping to promote the home page to campus and external constituencies, as appropriate.
- Monitoring national and international Internet and Web issues and new capabilities and services that may be of interest and benefit to the UNCG site and proposing implementation in the UNCG site as appropriate.
