Your Account
- What is iSpartan?
iSpartan is UNCG's implementation of Google Apps for Education (GAFE). iSpartan services at UNCG will include: Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sites, Talk and the Personal Start Page. You can learn more about the services provided on the GAFE web page.
- How do I access iSpartan?
The URL to login is http://ispartan.uncg.edu. Your user name and password will be your standard UNCG user name and password, used for logging into other UNCG systems such as Blackboard.
- How do I get support for iSpartan?
Technical support services (including providing answers to usability and "how to" questions) will be provided by Google, solely through the Google Apps Help Center. For questions about account creation and maintenance, contact 6-TECH at (336) 256-TECH (8324) or 6-tech@uncg.edu.
- What will my iSpartan email address be?
Your iSpartan email address will be YourUsername@uncg.edu. Students who opted into the UNCG Student Email pilot will be moved into iSpartan and will also have an "@uncg.edu" email address. UNCG ITS will continue to deliver mail to YourUsername@spartan.uncg.edu until December 2008.
- Can I have multiple accounts or aliases for use with student groups, organizations or other purposes?
UNCG ITS Guidelines for Email Accounts state that non-personal accounts and aliases must be owned by an active UNCG staff or faculty member. Students are not eligible for these services.
- Will I be able to change the name on my iSpartan account?
Due to technical complications, UNCG ITS is unable to perform computer account name (username) changes at this time. Users can request the "display name" of their account to be changed by: - Lotus Notes users: Call 256-TECH (8324) to submit a request to have your display name changed.
- iSpartan users: Within Gmail, click on Settings --> Accounts --> edit info.
- Can I use other email applications to read my iSpartan mail?
Yes. POP & IMAP Access is available. A list of available email clients and associated configuration settings is also available under the "Access Choices" section on the Gmail Help web page.
When configuring POP or IMAP access, be sure to enter your full iSpartan email address as the username. For example, your username would be yourusername@uncg.edu and not yourusername.
We expect this issue to be resolved in the future and are continuing to research and develop a solution that will allow for username changes to work across all UNCG systems. Students can request legal name changes at the Registrar's Office. SPA Employees can contact Human Resources at (336) 334-5009 and EPA Employees can contact the Office of the Provost at (336) 334-5494.
For more information on changing your name at UNCG, please view: Update User Name Request Form (PDF: requires a reader such as Adobe Reader).
Migration
- I opted into the UNCG Student Email pilot. Will my mail, calendar, contacts, and documents be transferred to my iSpartan account?
Unfortunately, we are unable to move accounts from one Google domain to another. Your account will have to be re-created in iSpartan. UNCG ITS is unable to migrate your mail calendar, contacts or documents from your UNCG Student Email (spartan.uncg.edu) account into your iSpartan account. Please read Migrate Your Mail, Calendar, and Contacts for instructions on how you can self-migrate your information.
Note: The UNCG Student Email (powered by Google) system will be available for students to login and migrate their data until December 2008.
- I use e-Spartan (I did not opt in to the UNCG Student Email pilot). Will my mail, calendar, and contacts be transferred to my iSpartan account?
Unfortunately, UNCG ITS is unable to migrate your e-Spartan mail, calendar, or contacts to your new iSpartan account. Please read Migrate Your Mail, Calendar, and Contacts for instructions on how you can self-migrate your information.
Note: The e-Spartan system will be available for students to login and migrate their data until August 2009.
Eligibility
- Who is eligible to receive an iSpartan email account?
All UNCG users will receive an iSpartan account. Currently, however, only students will be able to use iSpartan for email. Faculty and staff will be able to login to iSpartan and use the other features such as Docs, Talk, and Sites. However, the Gmail service will not be active and faculty and staff will continue to use Lotus Notes for their UNCG email.
- Is there any plan to migrate faculty and staff to iSpartan email?
ITS is investigating the option of transitioning faculty and staff to iSpartan email. More information will be communicated as this project progresses.
- Can I keep my iSpartan account after I leave the University?
iSpartan accounts will remain active as long as the user remains in good standing at UNCG, and abides by the Acceptable Use of Computing and Electronic Resources Policy. iSpartan accounts will follow the same retention and expiration policies as all other UNCG computing accounts. Specific information about student account expiration can be found on the University Account Expiration web page. Alumni are not currently eligible to retain their iSpartan accounts.
Contacts
- Will there be a UNCG contact list where I can lookup email addresses for other students, faculty and staff?
Yes, iSpartan will include a centrally-maintained UNCG contact list. Also, you can lookup email addresses for students, faculty, and staff members in the UNCG Campus Directory. You will have the ability to create your own personal contact lists as well.
- How do I access the UNCG Global Address Book?
You can use the Google Apps Address Book to search for another UNCG student, faculty or staff email address. In order to access the UNCG Address Book:
- Click on Compose Message.
- Click on To:. A separate window will be brought up called Contact Picker.

Note: If you are using Internet Explorer 6, click on Choose from Contacts (located to the right of Add BCC) to open the Contact Picker.
- The field that is marked Search My Contacts & The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, is the location where you should begin typing in the name of the student, faculty or staff member you are looking for.
- As you type the name of the person you are looking for, a list of names will begin to appear.
- Click on the appropriate name and it will be placed in the To: field at the bottom of the Contact Picker. You can continue to search for more names if you want to send this message to more than one person.
- Once you have added all the names for your message, click the Done button. This will close the Contact Picker screen and place those addresses into the To: field of your message.
Note: You can use this same procedure for the Cc: and Bcc: fields of your message as well.
- Click on Compose Message.

Troubleshooting
When I click on "Add Stuff" from my iSpartan home page, the page I am taken to only has a small number of gadgets. How can I fix this?
Due to technical issues with the gadgets being provided by the "Add gadgets to your homepage" page, UNCG has decided to temporarily remove this service.
