Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Project
Information Technology Services (ITS) will soon deploy voice over IP services to the campus. Providing voice services over the campus network allows UNCG to effectively leverage its existing investments in network, fiber, data center and telecommunications closet infrastructure to provision voice services in the most cost effective way. In the new voice services model, users will have more flexibility to select features that best fit their needs and budget.
Users will now be able to choose to utilize UNCG's voice services over a softphone (software intstalled on the user's computer) rather than having to purchase or lease a phone for their office. The new softphone capability provides ultimate mobility and functionality. Softphone users will get the full functionality of a rich featured digital phone that they can use anywhere in the world that has an internet connection.
ITS Telephone Services will begin contacting departments in June to discuss their telephony needs, and services and rates available to them in the new service model. ITS will begin migrating departments to the new services they have selected in late July according to an appropriate schedule agreed upon by the departments.
The migration of campus voice services to the new system will occur from July through November. Faculty and staff with analog phones who wish to remain on analog phones will not notice any substantial difference in service.
More information will be available on this site as project timelines are confirmed over the next two weeks. If you have any questions, please contact Layman Idol at (336) 334-5937.
