Connect to the Refreshed Wireless Network with a Lenovo and Vista
The instructions below explain how to configure your Lenovo laptop with Vista (and IBM Access Connections) in a building that has been refreshed. For a complete list of buildings that have been refreshed, read the Wireless Refresh Schedule.
NOTES:
- If your machine is not a Lenovo, but it is running Vista, please refer to: Connect to the refreshed wireless network with Vista.
- Before configuring Access Connections on your laptop, you should update your machine with the latest drivers. This can be done through the ThinkVantage Productivity Center, located in the ThinkVantage folder on your Start menu.
- Open IBM Access Connection by clicking on the Start button and selecting All Programs, Thinkvantage, and Access Connections.
- Click on the Locations pull-down menu and select Manage Profiles (or simply click on the Manage button).
- On the Manage Location Profiles window, click the Create button.
- On the Create New Profile window, fill out the following information:
- Name of Location Profile:
Type a name for your profile (for example, SCHOOL)
You may also choose a symbol for this connection from the pull down menu.
- Type of Network Connection:
Wireless LAN (802.11)
- Choose the network adapter:
Make certain your wireless network card is selected.

- Name of Location Profile:
- Click Next.
- On the Wireless Settings window, enter the wireless network configuration:
- Network Name (SSID):
UNCG-FacultyStaffStudent or UNCG-Guest
Note: You may click on Find Network to search for the available options.
- Connection type:
Infrastructure - Wireless Security Type:
Use IEEE 802.1x Authentication

- Network Name (SSID):
- Click on the Properties button to configure the 802.1x settings:
- Access point authentication:
WPA-2 - Data encryption:
AES - EAP type:
PEAP

- Access point authentication:
- Click the Authentication Properties button and fill out the following information:
- Check the Validate server certificate box.
- Check the Connect to these servers box and enter the following in the text field:
wireless.uncg.edu - In the Trusted Root Certification Authorities list, choose Thawte Premium Server CA.
- Under Select Authentication Method, choose EAP-MSCHAP v2.

- Click the Configure button and uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password.

- Click OK three times.
- Click Next.
- The items on the Additional Settings window (e.g., Network security, Applications, Default printer, etc.) can be configured to your personal setup.
- When finished, click Finish.
- A popup box should appear asking whether you wish to Apply this profile now. Click Yes.
- A pop-up balloon will open, asking for additional information to connect to the network. Click inside this balloon.

- On the Enter Credentials window, enter your User name and Password.
