Connect to the Wireless Network with Windows XP
The instructions below explain how to configure your Windows XP machine in a building that has not been refreshed. For a complete list of buildings that have been refreshed, read the Wireless Refresh Schedule.
NOTE: If your machine is a Lenovo with Windows XP, please refer to: Connect to the Wireless Network with a Lenovo and Windows XP.
- With your laptop powered on and your adapter connected, check the system tray for the wireless networks icon:

Double-click this icon, and the following window will appear:

- Each wireless network detected by your laptop will be listed. Select the network for the building you are in, and press the Connect button.
NOTE: The network name will be UNCG-XXXX, where XXXX is the four-letter code for the building. A complete list of SSIDs is found in the How to: Locate UNCG buildings with wireless service solution.
- A window will appear asking if you are certain that you want to connect to an insecure network. Click OK. This warning appears because you are connecting to an unencrypted network.
- A gold star will appear next to the network name along with the Connected label. You may close this window by using the X in the top right corner. The network icons in the tray will indicate that you are connected to the UNCG wireless network and provide an indication of the signal strength.
- Before you can begin using the network, you must log in. Open a Web browser. Instead of your usual home page, you will be redirected to the BlueSocket login page.
- On the login page, enter your Novell user name and password. Once you have entered your login information and clicked Submit, your browser will be redirected to your normal home page. You may now begin using the wireless network.
The System Tray is the collection of icons in the lower right corner of the screen to the left of the clock. It shows icons associated with programs running in the background. If you see a left-pointing arrow at the left edge of the tray, then Windows has hidden some of the system tray icons. You can click the arrow to display these icons again.
