Connect to the Refreshed Wireless Network with Vista

The instructions below explain how to configure your Vista machine to access the wireless network in a building that has been refreshed. For a complete list of buildings that have been refreshed, read the Wireless Refresh Schedule.

Notes:

• If your machine is a Lenovo running Vista, please refer to: Connect to the refreshed wireless network with a Lenovo and Vista.
  
  
• These instructions assume that you already have a wireless network connection enabled and configured for DHCP.

1. Under the Windows Vista Start menu, click Connect To. The Connect to a network window will open.
   
   
   
   
2. Click on Set up a connection or network.
   
   
3. Next, choose to Manually connect to a wireless network.
   
   
   
   
4. Click on Next.
   
   
5. On the Manually connect to a wireless network window, fill out the input areas as follows:
   
   
   • Network Name:
     UNCG-FacultyStaffStudent
   • Security Type:
     WPA2-Enterprise
   • Encryption type:
     AES
   • Check Start this connection automatically.
     
     
6. Click on Next.
   
   
7. Click on Change Connection Settings in the next window.
   
   
8. On the UNCG_FacultyStaffStudent Wireless Network Properties window, select the following options on the Connection tab:
   
   
   • Connect automatically when this network is in range.
   • Connect even if the network is not broadcasting.
     
     
9. On the Security tab, configure the following settings:
   
   
   • Security tape:
     WPA2-Enterprise
   • Encryption Type:
     AES
   • Network authentication method:
     Protected EAP (PEAP)
     
     
10. Click on the Settings button.
    
    
11. Configure the Protected EAP Properties as follows:
    
    
    • Check Validate server certificate.
    • Check Connect to these Servers and enter wireless.uncg.edu in the text box.
    • In the Trusted Root Certification Authorities section, select Thawte Premium Server CA.
    • Select Authentication Method:
      EAP-MSCHAP v 2
      
      
12. Click the Configure button.
    
    
13. Automatically use my Windows logon name and password should be unchecked.
    
    
    
    
14. Click OK.
    
    
15. Your UNCG-FacultyStaffStudent wireless profile should be configured. A pop-up balloon will open, asking for additional information to connect to the network. Click inside this balloon.
    
    
    
    
16. On the Enter Credentials window, enter your User name and Password.
