Connect to the Refreshed Wireless Network with Windows XP

The instructions below explain how to configure your Windows XP machine in a building that has been refreshed. For a complete list of buildings that have been refreshed, read the Wireless Refresh Schedule.

NOTE: If your machine is a Lenovo with Windows XP, please refer to: Connect to the Refreshed Wireless Network with a Lenovo and Windows XP.


 

  1. Double click the Wireless Network Status icon on the System Tray.

    Note: If you do not see the Wireless Network Status icon in your System Tray:

    • Click on the Start menu.
    • Select Network Connections.
    • Right-click on your wireless adaptor and select View Available Wireless Networks.

  2. On the Wireless Network Connection window (above), click on Change advanced settings to bring up the Wireless Network Connection Properties window.

  3. Click on the Wireless Networks tab. Make sure that Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings is checked.

  4. Click the Add button.

  5. Fill in the Network Properties for the UNCG-FacultyStaffStudent wireless network:

    • Network Name (SSID):
      UNCG-FacultyStaff Student

    • Network Authentication:
      WPA2

    • Data Encryption:
      AES

      Notes:
      • The Network Authentication and Data encryption settings below will be determined by the hardware in your machine and by how up-to-date your operating system is. The order of security is listed below:

        WPA-2: AES
        WPA-2: TKIP
        WPA: AES
        WPA: TKIP
      • There is a hotfix available for XP that enables support for WPA2 encryption. You can download the hotfix from Microsoft.

  6. Click on the Authentication tab.

  7. Ensure that Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network is selected. (It will be grayed out.)

  8. Configure the authentication as follows:

    • EAP Type:
      Protected EAP (PEAP)

    • Check Authenticate as computer when computer information is available.

  9. Click on the Properties button.

  10. Configure the Protected EAP Properties window:
    • Check Validate server certificate.

    • Check Connect to these servers. Fill in the text box with: wireless.uncg.edu.

    • Check Thawte Premium Server CA in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities list.

    • Choose EAP-MSCHAP v2 as the Authentication Method.

  11. Click on the Configure button.

  12. On the MSCHAPv2 Properties window, uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password and click OK three times to close all open windows and save your changes.

  13. When the Wireless Network Connection bubble appears on your desktop, click inside it.

  14. Enter your UNCG Credentials in the login window.

Note: To confirm your Connection Status, double-click on the wireless icon on the system tray.
