Wireless Refresh Schedule
In Fall 2007, ITS began evaluating a number of wireless product lines with the intent of refreshing the existing, aging Cisco wireless infrastructure and access points. After an extensive evaluation, ITS selected Aruba Networks as the preferred vendor to meet UNCG's wireless network requirements most effectively at the best price. Upgrading the campus wireless network allows ITS to design a long-term sustainable wireless network that operates as efficiently and cost effectively as possible.
In November 2007, ITS developed a deployment strategy based on funding projected to be available through the 2007-2008 Fiscal Year. This recommended deployment strategy consisted of three distinct phases:
- Phase I / Pilot - Install and configure core infrastructure, expand outside area, deploy in the following buildings: Bryan, Curry, Moore Nursing, EUC.
- Phase II - Replace remainder of legacy Cisco gear in academic buildings; replace and expand outdoor coverage by Fall 2008.
- Phase III - Expand coverage to the remainder of campus buildings and outdoor areas.
Academic buildings and a few other buildings on campus have been identified as Phase I or Phase II buildings. Remaining buildings and expanded outdoor coverage will be scheduled as funding becomes available. Ultimately, the wireless network will be expanded to provide ubiquitous, full campus coverage.
The aggressive schedule below was developed to meet our fiscal goals for completion by the end of June 2008 and is based on the following:
- Phase I / Pilot deployment is successfully completed by 22 April 2008.
- Building order beyond Phase I is based on current utilization, age of existing equipment, density of APs, and our ability to complete pre-installation cabling activities.
- Academic departments can tolerate work/service interruption while classes are in session.
- No work/service interruption in classroom buildings will be permitted during final exams (8 May through 14 May).

ITS will work with identified building contacts to confirm scheduled cutover dates at least two days in advance. ITS will conduct the cutover only with the approval of the identified building contacts.
