Service: Wired Networking At a Glance

Description

Client access networks are those designed for end use computing devices such as workstations, laptops, netbooks, tablets, printers, smartphones, specialized equipment, and so forth.  

There are two client access networks at UNCG designed explicitly for faculty, staff, student and visitor computing device use:  the Internet Service Provider and General Computing Networks.  Key differences between each is shown in the table below.

Internet Service Provider Network (ISP) 152.13.x.x

General Computing Network (GCN) 10.80.x.x (fac/staff) / 10.100.x.x (labs)

 

Network:  Public campus network (ISP)

 

Network:  Private campus network (GCN)

Unmanaged Workstation:  User is responsible for ensuring compliance with University computing and data security   standards.

Managed Workstation:  Centrally managed computing policies to automate workstation patching, antivirus and firewall   management.

Enterprise Directory Services:  May or may not be joined to Active Directory domain (isp.uncg.edu).

Enterprise Directory Services:  Joined to campus Active Directory domain (campus.uncg.edu).

Local Workstation Administrator     Rights:  Full

Local Workstation Administrator     Rights:  Optional at discretion of home Department.

Enforced Workstation Policies:  None

Enforced Workstation Policies:  University standard enforced group polices.  Some policies adjustable at discretion of   Department   (e.g., workstation screensaver timeout).

Mobility:  Re-registration required for   moving workstation to different public network ports across VLANs.

Mobility:  No re-registration   required for moving workstation to different private (GCN) network ports. 

Network Security:  Basic network infrastructure protection.

Network Security:  Advanced security features including infrastructure protection, perimeter traffic filtering, access network   protection and workstation endpoint security.

Access to Centrally Provided Services:  Full access to Internet-facing services.

Access to Centrally Provided Services:  Full

Access to the below services is only   available in a non-native mode via   SSLVPN portal or virtual desktop service (virtual.uncg.edu):

  • application delivery to a Windows     desktop (University licensed software  applications delivered to the virtual   desktop service)
  • mapped drives (network file space)   [SSLVPN portal or virtual desktop service]
  • printers in the private network [SSLVPN portal or virtual desktop service]
  • Banner Forms [SSLVPN portal or virtual desktop service]

Access to these services is native.

Access to University Data:  only through SSLVPN portal or virtual desktop service for non-Internet-facing services.

Access to University Data:  Full (with appropriate data access approval).

Centrally provided ITS Support:  Limited

Centrally provided ITS Support:  Full, for supported services and products.

Virtual Desktop Build Available:  No

Virtual Desktop Build Available:  Yes

Wired Access:  faculty, staff and students  using University-owned equipment.

Wired Access:  faculty, staff and students  using University-owned equipment or   faculty & staff access via a virtual Windows desktop via virtual.uncg.edu.

Wireless Access:  faculty, staff, students and visitors (services based on role).

Wireless Access:  faculty and staff

Best Suited For:  Users who need unrestricted ISP-style network access.

Best Suited For:  Most faculty, staff and students.
