Mathematica Software @ UNCG
Mathematica is a computational software program used in scientific, engineering, and mathematical fields and other areas of technical computing.
Who is eligible?
Mathematica may be installed on a University (desktop or laptop) computer, or used on a home computer by faculty, staff or students enrolled in degree-granting programs at UNCG.
How can I get the software?
- Install from the campus network.
Mathematica is available for installation at no charge from the UNCG network for University-owned computers. It may be installed from Run Advertised Programs (RAP). For details on installing software from RAP please see Installing Applications on the General Computing Network.
- Download to personally-owned faculty/staff machines.
Installers for faculty are available from the Mathematica website for eligible faculty and staff.
- Download to personally-owned student computers.
Students who wish to download Mathematica for use on their personal computers may do so by purchasing an activation key for $5. Bring your ID, along with cash or check,* to the ITS Client Services office in 202 Forney. Subsequently, you will receive an email with the activation key and a download link for the software. (*We regret we are unable to process credit cards.)
Using Mathematica
If you are brand-new to Mathematica, below are some suggestions from the publisher on the best ways to get started.
Students
- Watch the "Hands-On Start to Mathematica" tutorial screencast.
- Explore the Learning Center for topics relevant to your interests.
- Launch Mathematica, open the Classroom Assistant, and perform your first few computations.
- You're now ready for the projects that faculty will assign.
Teaching faculty
- Sign up for the "Overview of Mathematica for Education" seminar.
- Explore the Learning Center for topics relevant to your interests.
- Find some prebuilt examples and courseware from the Demonstrations Project, MathWorld, and the Library Archive.
- Assign the above steps in the student section to your classes as homework.
Research faculty
- Sign up for the "Overview of Mathematica for Education" seminar.
- Take other seminars relevant to your work.
- Explore the Learning Center for topics relevant to your interests.
- Go to the Demonstrations Project site to see what's possible.
- Go to the Library Archive for additional resources.
