Access Methods

Compressed, ready-to-stream media will be placed on the Helix server maintained by Information Technology Services. Each department or facility has its own folder designated by a three letter acronym. There are several ways to access the media, and each method is outlined below.

Web Linking

There are two ways to give access to your media on the Web - embedding it to play within the page and having it play in an external player. In this scenario, the client is provided with a predetermined Web link that can simply be placed on the Web site. Users accessing the page will be able to click on the link and have the media streamed to their machine. This process is often utilized when using the QuickTime media format.

After uploading your content to the streaming media server, simply follow the appropriate steps to access your media:

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

Clients must use FTP to upload files to their space. A free version of FTP software, such as FileZilla, can be downloaded to use on your computer at home.

Clients can use FTP to upload files on campus as well. WS_FTP Home is the recommended FTP application on campus. It is available in the UNCG Client Community folder in the Novell Application Explorer. For instructions on how to use WS_FTP Home, go to the WS_FTP Home Support Center.

When using FTP to upload your media files:

Drive Mapping

This process will provide the client with a means to update and maintain the assigned space on the real.uncg.edu server. After designating a specific drive letter, a client can drag and drop items to and from the folder similar to local tasks.

  1. Right-click on My Computer, and select Map Network Drive.
  2. Choose an unmapped drive, such as H:.
  3. For the path, type:
\\real\real.uncg.edu\XXX (where XXX is your 3-letter department code)
  4. Click on Connect using a different user name.
  5. Enter your ADS user name and password. You must preface your user name with uncg (i.e., uncg\jhdoe). This tells the system that you are logging in using your UNCG ADS-network account.
  6. Click on OK.
  7. Click on the Reconnect at Logon box so you will always have that drive mapped.
  8. Click on OK.

You will see your directory listed as a folder. Double-click on it to open it. You can now drag and drop files into this space just as if it were a folder on your local machine.
