Creating Accessible Streaming Media

In an effort to be proactive in our responsibility to create accessible content, UNCG Web Services provides the following guidance on best practices. Please note that requirements forĀ Web Accessibility are provided in theĀ University Policy Manual.

Videos should be captioned to provide an accessible method of consuming the information provided. A transcript document can also prove useful by providing a searchable method of finding key words/concepts contained in the video. Captions/transcripts can be created in YouTube, or via other fee-based third-party services.

Managing Captions via YouTube

  1. Login to your Video Manager in YouTube.

To access the Video Manager from the Home page of your YouTube account:

Third-Party Caption/Transcription Services

Information Technology Services (ITS) can provide information about fee-based third-party services that have been used successfully in the past, and whose usage is approved by the University. Contact 6-TECH at (336) 256-TECH (8324) or 6-TECH@uncg.edu for information about these services.

Instructions

You may also choose to use automatic captioning services. YouTube can use speech recognition technology to automatically create captions. As these are automatically generated, the quality of the captions may vary from video to video. You can always edit or remove captions.
