Support Options for Students With a Program Laptop

Services are free of charge unless otherwise noted. Students must backup their data before being serviced by the 6-TECH Service Center.

Comprehensive Hardware Repair Service

  • Student Laptop Program repairs covered by warranty or accidental damage protection are provided free of charge (note: a service charge may be applied if accidental damage protection is abused).
  • For out of warranty repairs, the student is responsible only for the cost of the part. Our staff will aid students in finding the best price for parts, which can then be brought into the 6-TECH Service Center for installation free of charge.

University-Provided Software Installation & Assistance

Installation, instruction, and assistance of University-provided software are available for currently registered students who have purchased through the Student Laptop Program. Once a student has graduated or transferred, the software can no longer be obtained.

Wireless Network Connection Assistance

The 6-TECH Service Center provides assistance with connecting to the wireless network.

Malware Scanning & Removal

Viruses, spyware, and other malware can significantly impair or render your laptop inoperable. The 6-TECH Service Center performs scans for and will attempt to remove these items via anti-malware software or a software re-image.

Support Options for Students With a non-Program Laptop

Limited Hardware Repair Service

Hardware repairs are not provided for non-program laptops, with the exception of Lenovos, Dells, and Apples that are from the same model lines offered by SLP (Student Laptop Program) and CHP (Campus-Wide Hardware Procurement Program). The laptop must also be under manufacturer’s warranty and be owned by either UNCG or by a student, faculty, or staff of UNCG.

University-Provided Software Installation & Assistance

The 6-TECH Service Center provides installation assistance, instruction and help using University-provided software available to owners of non-program laptops. Students must bring the media (e.g., CD/DVD's) when seeking assistance.

Faculty and Staff Support Options

VPN Installation & Support

Virtual Private Networking (VPN) is used to create a secure path to the General Computing Network (GCN) at UNCG for your machine to access campus resources remotely. The 6-TECH Service Center will assist faculty and staff with installing and configuring the VPN client on their University-provided laptop.

The 6-TECH Service Center provides best effort  installation assistance, instruction and help using University-provided software available to owners of non-program laptops. Faculty/Staff must bring the media (e.g., CD/DVD's) when seeking assistance.

Mobile Device Support (Smartphone, iPhone, Tablet, iPad, etc.)

The 6-TECH Service Center supports UNCG-supported mobile applications, such as access to iSpartan for email/calendaring/contacts.
