Copyright Dos and Don'ts for Distance Education

Format, Genre or Form of Art Work Dos Don'ts
Ballet.   Do not perform or dance without permission.
Books. Do use text, a chart, a graph, a map, or a picture. Do digitize text, a chart, a graph, a map, or a picture.  
CD-Is or CD-ROMs. Do use a still frame. Do not use audio or a visual sequence without permission.
Choreographed works.   Do not perform or dance without permission.
Dramatic works.   Do not read or act out a dramatic work without permission.
DVDs. Do use a still frame. Do not use audio or a visual sequence without permission.
Filmstrips. Do use a frame. Do not use audio or sequential, consecutive images without permission.
Laserdiscs. Do use a still frame. Do not use audio or a visual sequence without permission.
Motion pictures. Do use a still frame. Do not use audio or a visual sequence without permission.
Music that is dramatic.   Do not use audio without permission.
Music that is pre-recorded and non-dramatic. Do use portions of audio.  
Music that is unlicensed.   Do not sing or play without permission.
Newspapers that are current. Do make a transparency and read portions of text.  
Poems. Do read portions of text.  
Serials that are current. Do make a transparency and read portions of text.  
Slide Sets. Do use a slide. Do not use sequential, consecutive images without permission.
Software programs. Do use a screen, self-generated screens, self-generated animation, clip art, or presentation graphics. Do not use commercial animation without permission.
Transparency sets. Do use a transparency. Do not use audio or sequential, consecutive images without permission.
VHS videocassette tapes. Do use a still frame. Do not use audio or a visual sequence without permission.
