  1. What types of file attachments are supported?

The supported file types are as follows:

    File Format Versions
    Adobe PDF 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4
    Microsoft Excel 97-XP
    Microsoft PowerPoint 97-XP
    Microsoft Word 97-XP
    Corel WordPerfect 6.0-2000
    ZIP Archives 2.6 or earlier
    HTML All
    ASCII Text All

  2. How do I get updates for my Blackberry device?

On (at least) a monthly basis, go to the telephone dial screen and enter *228, then connect as if making a voice call. Follow the Verizon voice prompts to "Update Your Roaming Capabilities" (Option # 2) on your phone. Let the process complete before disconnecting. You will receive a verbal and screen message that the update was successful.

  3. How do I add other email (POP) accounts to my BlackBerry?

Please note that the integration and configuration of non-UNCG email accounts is not a supported service. Visit the Blackberry support pages as well as the technical support resources of your non-UNCG email account provider.

    This example uses GMAIL:

    • Go to the BlackBerry login page.
    • Click on Create New account.
    • Type in your device PIN and ESN.  You can find both of these by going into Options-->Status on the Handheld device.
    • Follow the rest of the setup choices to finish setting up your BlackBerry Web Account.  This will create an email account and address in the format of dcassese@vzw.blackberry.net (where dcassese is the username you used when setting up the account).
    • Once you have your account, look for Add other email accounts. Then simply add your email address and login information.

Note: You may also want to read Configuring your email client: BlackBerry Internet Service at the GMAIL Help Center.

  4. Do I need to install the Blackberry desktop software that came with my Blackberry?

No, you don't need to install the desktop software. If you do, it will try to set up the Redirector Service and ask you questions about your Lotus Notes email account. You do NOT want to do this. Let the Blackberry sync through the cellular service, not through the redirector service. This software can be used to install additional applications, however. If this software is used, we recommend you do NOT have it start automatically when you reboot your computer as it will attempt to connect to your Lotus Notes email account and will time out. See the support information provided with the software for technical support and further information.

  5. My contact list in my Lotus Notes desktop client did not sync with my Blackberry.

This will also mean that the contacts are NOT available on e-Spartan (web client).  The reason for this is the contact lists have NOT been synched with the server.  To do this:
    • Open the Lotus Notes desktop client.
    • Click on the Actions pull-down menu and select Synchronize Address Book.

    Note
: You can use this same procedure if you want to Synchronize the Journal.

  6. How many email accounts can I have?

Up to ten email addresses can be supported. Support is not provided for non-UNCG email accounts by UNCG. If your Blackberry device becomes corrupted due to non-UNCG email accounts and other non-supported applications and services, contact 6-TECH who will arrange to have your device "wiped" to a clean configuration.

  7. How do you bookmark favorite Web sites on the BlackBerry Browser?

It's as easy to bookmark your favorite Web sites on the BlackBerry browser as it is in a normal desktop browser.
    • Open the BlackBerry Internet Browser.
    • Click on the track wheel and select Go To from the menu that appears.
    • Enter the desired URL and click on OK to continue.
    • Once you have reached the URL, click on the track wheel and select Add Bookmark from the menu that appears.
    • Choose a Name for the bookmark and click Add.

  8. How do I open an attachment?
    • When an email arrives with an attachment, you will see within the email message:
the name of the attachment, the size of the attachment, and the type of attachment
    • To open the attachment, click on the track wheel from within the message and choose Open Attachment from the menu that appears.
    • You will then have the choice to open the Full content or a Table of Contents view of the attachment, which shows an outline of the contents of the file. Choose your preferred option, and click on the track wheel to open. The attachment will then be rendered on the screen.

There is no additional software to download to make this work – it's just a part of the BlackBerry solution.

  9. I can't click on a link in my email and navigate to a Web page. Why is this?

The internal service that allows the Blackberry server to use our Web server and go outside our firewall has not been set up.  You must copy and paste the link into the Internet browser.

  10. My Internet browser is missing. How can I fix this?

This can happen if you've upgraded your BlackBerry OS, or if you delete your service books. To fix the problem on your BlackBerry:
    • Click on the Options icon and select Advanced Options from the menu.
    • Select Host Routing Tables.
    • Select Register Now.

  11. How do I synchronize folders between Lotus Notes and my BlackBerry?

To select the folder (or folders) to sync between Lotus Notes and your BlackBerry, follow the steps below.
    • With the trackwheel, click on the Messages icon.
    • Click the trackwheel again. A menu will be displayed. Scroll down and select Options and click the trackwheel.
    • Scroll down and select Email Settings and click the trackwheel.
    • Click the trackwheel again. A menu will be displayed.
    • Scroll down and select Folder Redirection and click the trackwheel.
    • A screen will be displayed with Desktop and the user's name.
    • To select one (or more) folder(s):
      • Scroll down and select the user name. Click the trackwheel.
      • A menu will be displayed. Expand should be highlighted. Click the trackwheel.
      • A list of the folders that are in your mailbox will be displayed. The folders that are currently being synchronized will have a check mark next to their name. To select one folder to sync, scroll to the folder name and click the trackwheel. A new menu will be displayed.
      • To change the folder that is highlighted, highlight Change Option from the menu and click the trackwheel. This will place a checkmark next to the folder name.
      • Click the trackwheel again. Scroll down so that Save is highlighted and click the trackwheel.
    • To select all folders:
      • Scroll down and select the user name. Click the trackwheel.
      • Scroll down and highlight Select All. Click the trackwheel.
      • Click the trackwheel again. Scroll down so that Save is highlighted and click the trackwheel.

  12. What happens if I leave the University and I have a personal device with the University service on it?

If you have a personal device, you or someone from your department will need to contact Telephone Services in order to disconnect the services provided through the University. You will also need to contact 6-TECH at (336) 256-TECH (8324) so the device can be wiped in order to remove all University information. The drawback to this is you will lose all personal information as well as University information.

  13. I downloaded some software applications/ringtones and now there is a charge appearing for the additional service. Why?

Be very careful of what you are agreeing to when you visit sites that offer "free" applications, services or ringtones for your Blackberry. Much like the "phishing" schemes on websites, you will need to be careful of the fine print of any site offering a free service of this nature as many have hidden monthly charges. None of these additional downloads are part of the University Blackberry service offering and these additional charges will be sent to the department of the device holder.

  14. Can I buy accessories for the Blackberry from UNCG?

Yes. Some accessories are available for purchase from Telephone Services but support for the accessories is not provided. Contact Telephone Services at (336) 334-5937 with questions.
