Ordering a BlackBerry

You can order a BlackBerry through Telephone Services at (336) 334-5937. We will need all requests in writing. Please send all requests to telecom@uncg.edu or kdnewnam@uncg.edu.

Be sure to have the following information:

  1. What BlackBerry device do you want to purchase?
    • 8703e - Wider and more suited for primary email usage
    • 8830 - Domestic/International model for domestic and global travel (additional charge and service required for Global Service)
    • 8130 - "The Pearl" model comes with a camera and video camera

  2. What type of monthly service do you require?
If you are getting the voice service, will you be porting an existing phone number over to your BlackBerry?  If so, have the number and cellular provider ready. We will also need a copy of the latest statement from your provider if your number is being ported.

  3. Name of the Departmental Authorization personnel
Please make the appropriate budgetary arrangements with your department prior to ordering your Blackberry. All orders must be approved by an authorized budgetary employee in your department and a departmental Fund number must be provided.

Note: Only accounts paid for by UNCG will be accepted.

  4. Employee's Name who will be the Blackberry owner

Receiving, Activating and Training on your BlackBerry

All BlackBerry devices are sent to Telephone Services who will verify the order, the billing, and the asset information. You will then be contacted about the next activation/training session where you can pick up your device, have it activated and attend a training session. Availability and delivery may be subject to vendor schedules, so be sure to order your device several weeks before you need it in order for hardware delivery and training attendance to occur.

Blackberry delivery and training sessions are held weekly on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at various locations around campus. Telephone Services staff, as well as ITS technical support staff, will be at these sessions to provide support and assistance in initial configuration and activation. General training is provided.

Note: If you are porting an existing telephone number, the old number will no longer work once the BlackBerry is activated. You will need to turn off your old device before the new one can be ported. Once you have been contacted regarding this, you will no longer be able to make or receive phone calls using your old phone. This will not be done until the morning of the training session.
