Cellular Services
You may purchase a cell phone through Telephone Services, or directly from a cellular vendor.
Purchase through Telephone Services
Departments will have the option of purchasing service on the state contract through Telephone Services, with a new surcharge of $5.00/month added per phone to cover Telephone Services overhead associated with handling ordering, billing, changes in service/equipment and dealing with problems.
- Advantages for the department include not having to sign a long-term contract with a vendor and not having to deal directly with the vendor regarding service changes, billing disputes, and other problems.
- Disadvantages with current state contract cell phone plans include not being able to take advantage of special offers that include "free" and shared minutes.

Direct Purchase
Departments will have the option of purchasing service directly from the cellular vendor at the rates and plans offered by the various vendors. In this instance they will be billed directly by the vendor and will be responsible for handling all ordering, changes, and problems on their own. There is no surcharge for this option. Telephone Services would advise departments on selection of plans if requested.
- Advantages for the department include ability to take advantage of special offers for free and shared minutes.
- Disadvantages include requirements to sign a long-term contract with penalties for early exit from contract and having to deal with vendors regarding service changes, billing disputes, and other problems.

Departments will have the option of purchasing Nextel service only through the Vendor. Under this option, departments can order Nextel service directly from the vendor under the terms of the state contract and will be billed directly. There is no surcharge for this option.
Note: Cellular Phone Discounts are available for employees of the University for their personal cell phone service from the following vendors:
