Telephone Features for Students
UNCG Telephone Services local service provides residential line service with the following feature:
- Unlimited on campus calls to other students and administrative telephones.
Line Features
Residential telephone service at UNCG consists of a private line with four features included at no additional charge. Each student room and campus apartment has one telephone outlet. Telephone numbers are permanently assigned to the rooms and apartments. Therefore, with each move, your telephone number will change. We cannot provide operator intercept service when your telephone number changes. All residents must bring their own telephone. UNCG Telephone Services does not sell or lease residential telephone sets or equipment. If you do not have a telephone, you can purchase one from the University Bookstore or other local merchants. Cordless telephones do not operate effectively on campus. The Telephone Services Department does not service privately owned phones or answering machines.
Distinctive Ringing
- How can you tell if a call is coming from on-campus or off-campus?
Just listen to what kind of ring it is. One ring repeated every few seconds is an on-campus call. Two short rings repeated every few seconds is an off-campus call.
Call Waiting Signals
Have you ever been afraid to use your phone because you were expecting an important call? Don't stress - we have a solution. If someone calls while you are on the phone, you will hear a "beep" in your handset. This is called a Call Waiting Signal.
- Only you can hear the beep. The person you are talking with will not hear it.
- One beep means an on-campus call.
- Two beeps means an off-campus call.
When you hear a Call Waiting signal, the person who has called you does not hear a busy tone. Instead, they will hear a normal ringing tone that ends with a short beep. This signal, the Call Waiting signal, lets them know to wait for you to answer. There are two ways you can respond to a CALL WAITING Signal:
- You can HANG UP to end your present conversation. Your phone will then ring. When you answer, you
will be connected with the waiting caller.
- You can put your present call on HOLD (by tapping the switchhook on your telephone's cradle) and answer the waiting call.
If you use a modem you will need to turn Call Waiting off. Use the code *70. When you hangup from your session Call Waiting will automatically reset.
Caller ID Signals
Caller ID Number Only allows you to identify a caller's telephone number before answering an incoming call. A calling party's number is shown only on display equipment compatible with this feature. Unless you have compatible display equipment attached to your telephone line, Caller ID Number Only cannot provide the calling party's number.
