UNCG System Administrator Access to Virtual Private Networking
Virtual Private Networking (VPN) is used to create a secure path to UNCG's network in order for your machine to access restricted data or protected systems. VPN creates an encrypted network connection between you and the UNCG network. Your computer will logically be part of the UNCG network when using a VPN connection.
This document is for system administrators who have a specialized need to access restricted data or protected systems, and need to operate behind the firewall in order to administer a server or application. Please note that this level of access is rarely needed. In order to use VPN, you must have an active UNCG Novell account (or Novell Authentication Object) and an Internet connection. You also need to get the appropriate VPN group name and group password by contacting 6-TECH at 336-256-TECH (8324) or 6-tech@uncg.edu.
Only individuals who have primary system administrator responsibilities for computers behind the firewall are eligible for System Administrator VPN privileges. Be prepared to answer these questions:
- What are the IP address and name of the server you wish to administer?
- What application will you be running? What type of application is it?
- Are you the sole administrator?
- Is this activity part of a project, and if so, what number?
- For which department is this needed? Who is the department head? Is the department head aware of your request?
- Is this an Enterprise Systems Policy server?
- Who is the technical lead who was involved in the server placement behind the firewall?
You can review the requirements, other account types (Faculty and Staff or Vendor), or proceed to installation instructions for Windows or Mac OS X.
