Windows Vista and VPN
The Cisco VPN Client is not supported on a machine that has been upgraded from Windows XP to Vista:
- A computer that has been upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista may experience problems with the VPN client (e.g., an inability to connect and login with the client or the inability to install the virtual adapter).
- Upgrading a Windows XP installation with legacy applications (such as, Firewalls, Antivirus, and device drivers) to Vista is problematic because these legacy applications are not supported on Vista.
- Upgrading from a clean install of Windows XP to Vista has been tested and the VPN client does work in this situation.
- Other items that are not supported by the Cisco VPN Client for Windows Vista:
- Start Before Logon
- SmartCard Authentication
- Integrated Firewall
- InstallShield
- 64-bit support
- AutoUpdate
- Translated Online Help - Provided only in English
If you have upgraded to Windows Vista and you are experiencing problems with the VPN client:
- Back up any information such as documents, spreadsheets, pictures, etc. that you would like to keep on your computer.
- Reinstall Windows XP (This will destroy all existing data!).
Note: Do not install drivers, or any other third-party software. This must be a "Clean Install."
- Upgrade to Windows Vista.
Note: Operating sytem reinstalls are not supported by Information Technology Services (ITS) on personal (non-University) machines. However, we do provide support for installs on University machines used for work at home.
