Requirements for Virtual Private Networking at UNCG
Citizenship and Residency
The government of the United States of America considers certain cryptographic software, such as the Cisco Virtual Private Network (VPN) client, to be military munitions for the purposes of export, and restricts the distribution of such software from persons of certain nationalities, and to certain nations. Do not supply this software to any person other than a U.S. citizen residing in the U.S. without consulting UNCG Counsel. If you have further questions about export, please call 6-TECH Technical Support at 336-334-TECH (8324). For more information, read Contract Compliance Provisions and Restrictions on the Export of Cryptographic Software.
Status
VPN access is not available to UNCG students. It is available to faculty and staff, system administrators, and certain vendors.
Machine Requirements
This is encryption software, and it requires CPU cycles to encrypt and decrypt IP traffic. Newer and faster machines will not experience any noticeable slowness while using VPN software, but this may not be true for machines that are older. Our recommendations for machines capable of efficient VPN usage are shown below. After you verify that the computer you wish to use with VPN meets the minimum requirements, you can download the client software and view the installation instructions for Windows and Mac OS X.
| Supported OS | Minimum recommended processor speed |
|---|---|
| Windows XP | 500 Mhz Pentium processor; 128 MB RAM |
| Windows Vista | Pentium processor; 512 MB RAM |
| Mac OS X (10.4.10) | 333 Mhz Power Mac; 512 MB RAM |
