Containers at UNCG

Information Technology Services (ITS) provides container hosting in the University Data Centers. This service provides faculty and staff with a reliable, monitored, secure and managed solution for running specialized applications without having to purchase and manage a physical server.

The service includes:

  • Architectural design to meet vendor specifications
  • Management of the physical infrastructure and virtual servers used in the environment
  • Installation and management of operating system
  • Installation and management of networking
  • 24 x 7 x 365 operational monitoring
  • Assistance in business continuity planning
  • Enterprise backup - server & data backup, restoration and testing
  • Capacity planning
  • Firewall protection - all virtual servers in the ITS Data Center are behind a firewall. Firewalls limit access between computer networks based on security policies to protect sensitive data on servers and systems.

Operational Maintenance

ITS personnel will maintain the container's underlying operating system (OS) with scheduled patches. The client is responsible for verifying that the hosted container is patched and maintained in accordance with ITS' maintenance policy.

Container Deployment

Containers will be deployed on a one-to-one ratio to virtual servers. Load balancing services are available for resilient workloads.
