What: Change to Office desktop apps licensing

What Is Changing?
On Wednesday, July 30, the Office desktop apps on managed Windows computers will switch from device-based licensing to user-based licensing.
This update adds important features, including:
- Sensitivity labels to protect and classify data
- Microsoft Copilot (for users with the appropriate license)
These changes apply only to faculty and staff Windows-based GCN computers.
Do I Need to Do Anything?
No. The license type will update automatically.

No. This change does not affect Macs or mobile devices. Those devices already use user-based licensing. - Does this change affect the Office web apps?
No. This change does not affect the Office web apps. The web apps will continue to work as they do now. - Does this change affect labs or classroom computers?
No. This change does not affect labs or classroom computers. Those computers will stay device-licensed to support teaching. If you need features like sensitivity labels or Copilot in a lab or classroom, contact your DTS or 6-TECH to explore your options. - What if I share my computer with someone else?
If you share your computer with someone else, each person will need their own Office license. If you have questions about sharing a device, contact your DTS or 6-TECH for help.
