As part of UNCG’s transition to Microsoft, support for Google Sites in the university’s Google environment is being phased out. Google Sites owners and editors must take action before September 16, 2024.

Key Deadline: September 16, 2024

By this date, all data on Google Sites must be moved to one of the alternative platforms provided by UNCG, or transferred to a personal Gmail account. This transition is part of the university’s broader technology shift and will ensure content remains accessible and functional.

Options for Migration

To facilitate this transition, UNCG is offering several alternatives:

  1. SharePoint: Ideal for sites intended for internal audiences within the university. SharePoint integrates seamlessly with Microsoft 365, making it well-suited for department-specific sites or internal projects.
  2. WordPress: This is UNCG’s designated platform for public-facing sites. If a site is intended for a broader external audience, WordPress provides a flexible and user-friendly environment for managing content.
  3. Canvas Student ePortfolios (Portfolium): Ideal for students working on projects or creating portfolios. This platform allows for an integrated experience within the UNCG Canvas environment.
  4. Personal Gmail Account: For those who wish to continue using Google Sites, there is an option to transfer sites to a personal Google account, allowing maintenance outside of the university’s systems.

Steps to Take Now

For Google Sites owners or editors:

  1. Identify Your Sites: Log in to Google Sites with UNCG credentials. Select Owned by me to view owned sites and Owned by anyone to review editor and viewer roles.
  2. Evaluate the Alternatives: Determine which platform best suits each site’s needs, considering audience, functionality, and future updates. See our Google Sites Alternatives article for details.
  3. Plan Your Migration: Plan to migrate data and the rebuild sites on the new platform.
  4. Request a Consultation: If you’re unsure which alternative is the best fit, don’t hesitate to request a consultation. Our team is ready to assist you in making the right choice.
