Who Is Affected?

Faculty, staff, and students using Windows 10 or Windows 11 on UNCG-owned or personal computers.

What’s Happening?

On Wednesday, Oct. 15, Microsoft released a critical update for all versions of Windows to fix a severe security vulnerability in the operating system.

To help protect campus systems, Information Technology Services (ITS) has modified the normal patching schedule for UNCG-owned computers and servers.

When?

  • UNCG-owned computers: The update will install automatically. You must restart your computer within 48 hours after installation. If it is not manually restarted within that time, it will restart automatically.
  • ITS-hosted servers: Patching will occur on Friday, Oct. 17, between midnight and 7 a.m
  • Personal computers: Install the patch immediately

What You Need to Do

For UNCG-owned computers

  • You can manually restart your computer anytime within 48 hours after the update installs to choose a time that works best for you.
  • Schedule the restart by using the pop-up notification that appears after installation.
  • If your computer is off campus, connect to the VPN to ensure it receives the update. (This step should not be necessary in most cases.)

For ITS-hosted servers

  • All ITS-managed Windows servers will be updated during the scheduled maintenance window on Oct. 17.

For personal computers

  • Install the latest Windows updates immediately to protect your computer from this vulnerability.

Why This Change?

This update addresses a critical security issue that could allow attackers to gain unauthorized access or control of affected systems. Installing the patch as soon as possible helps protect your data and the university’s network.
