Who: Faculty, staff, and students who create, store, or share videos using Panopto.

What: UNCG will end its use of Panopto as a campus service on Tuesday, December 31, 2025. This change supports our goal of simplifying our video tool set by transitioning to Microsoft 365 tools that offer similar—and in many cases, more integrated—functionality.

UNCG will not renew its Panopto contract. Instead, the following Microsoft 365 tools are now recommended:

  • Microsoft OneDrive – for long-term video storage.
  • Microsoft Stream – for video playback and accessibility features.
  • Clipchamp – for basic video editing.

These tools are already available through your UNCG Microsoft 365 account and work seamlessly together to create, store, and share video content.

When: Panopto service at UNCG ends on Tuesday, December 31, 2025.

Why:

This change provides:

  • Integrated tools that work across Canvas, Microsoft Teams, and OneDrive
  • Simplified permissions using your UNCG login
  • User-friendly editing with Clipchamp
  • Reduced costs and system complexity for video support campus-wide

Do I Need to Do Anything?

Yes — start transitioning your video content now to ensure a smooth, secure move.

For up to date information, follow the Panopto Retirement project on the Tech Initiatives website.

Starting Fall 2025:

  • Stop using Panopto and begin creating all new video content in OneDrive, Stream, and Clipchamp.
  • Download any Panopto videos you wish to keep, especially high-value materials. Use the Download Panopto Videos from Canvas instructions to retrieve them.
  • Organize and store downloaded videos in OneDrive for long-term access.
  • Stay up to date: Visit the Tech Initiatives project page for the latest news, resources, and timelines about this transition.

If you do not wish to keep any Panopto content, no action is needed for those videos.

Important: Panopto automatically archives videos that haven’t been viewed or edited in 12 months and 1 day, and these may not appear in Canvas. If you need help accessing archived videos—or have a large number of videos to retain—fill out the Panopto Transition Support Request form.

After Downloading Your Videos:

  • Store videos in Microsoft OneDrive for retention and sharing.
  • Use Microsoft Stream to play, transcribe, and manage accessibility features.
  • Use Clipchamp to record, trim, or combine videos for reuse.

Workshops on using Microsoft Stream and Clipchamp will be available in early August.

FERPA Reminder

If your Panopto videos include student names, images, voices, or class discussions, they may contain FERPA-protected information. Review your content before sharing to ensure it complies with university privacy policies.
