Who Is Affected?
Faculty, staff, and anyone responsible for creating or managing digital content at UNCG.
What Is Happening?
On April 20, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a one-year extension to the ADA Title II digital accessibility compliance deadline.
This extension provides additional time for institutions to meet accessibility requirements for digital content.
When?
The original compliance deadline of Friday, April 24, 2026, has been extended by one year.
Why Is This Change Happening?
The extension allows institutions more time to:
- Review current accessibility efforts
- Address complex accessibility challenges
- Improve processes for long-term compliance
At UNCG, this time will be used to refine plans and continue progress toward full accessibility.
What Does This Mean for Course Content?
- Spring 2026 courses are not expected to be fully accessible by the original April 24, 2026 deadline.
- UNCG is reviewing whether timelines for Summer and Fall 2026 courses need adjustment.
- Improving instructor-created course materials remains the current priority.
- Accessibility is still required for students who need it. If you have active students with accessibility needs, you must continue providing accessible materials and accommodations.
What Does This Mean for Public-Facing Content?
The extension allows UNCG to:
- Review internal timelines
- Assess current progress
- Plan next steps for remaining accessibility work
This includes continued focus on:
- Third-party tools and vendor products
- Social media accessibility
- Accessible forms and PDFs
- Reviewing VPATs (Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates) to support informed decisions
Do I Need to Do Anything?
Continue improving the accessibility of your digital content.
If you create or manage content, focus on making materials as accessible as possible, especially course materials and public-facing resources.
Will There Be More Updates?
Yes. Additional updates and guidance will be shared soon as timelines and plans are refined.
