Effective August 8, 2025, the Lucid for Education integration within Canvas will be disabled due to persistent accessibility issues. This change affects both Lucidchart and Lucidspark, which will no longer be available as external tools in Canvas. Users will no longer be able to embed Lucid documents using the Rich Content Editor (RCE) or submit assignments via the Lucid External Tool.
This action supports UNCG’s ongoing efforts to meet April 2026 accessibility compliance requirements.
What’s Changing on August 8
- Canvas items that use Lucid as an external tool (e.g., for assignment submissions) or include embedded Lucid files will display the error:
“couldn’t find valid settings for this link.” - You can still access your Lucidchart and Lucidspark content directly at lucid.app, but the Canvas integration will no longer work.
- Assignments using Lucid as an external tool will generate “Course Copy Errors” during course import.
- Embedded Lucid documents in Canvas content (e.g., Pages, Discussions) will not generate course copy errors, but will trigger an error message when opened.
Why This Change is Happening
Lucidchart and Lucidspark do not currently meet key accessibility standards—specifically keyboard navigation and screen reader compatibility. These limitations prevent Lucid tools from being used as mandatory instructional resources and conflict with UNCG’s goal to meet WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines by April 2026.
What You Need to Know
- Faculty and students may continue to use Lucid tools optionally. However, instructors who include Lucid-developed materials (e.g., mind maps) in their courses must ensure the materials meet WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards.
- At this time, content developed in Lucid must be made accessible by:
- Adding alt text to all elements,
- Finalizing the reading order in Lucid, and
- Exporting the content as an accessible PDF to Adobe Acrobat.
- Faculty should review and update any course content that relies on the Lucid integration to avoid broken links or functionality loss.
Next Steps for Faculty
- Access your existing Lucid content at lucid.app.
- Update Canvas items (Assignments, Pages, Discussions) that include embedded Lucid files.
- Change the Submission Type for assignments using the Lucid External Tool:
- Go to Assignments in your Canvas course.
- Click the three-dot menu (kebab icon) next to the affected assignment.
- Select Edit, then More Options.
- Update instructions and choose a new Submission Type.
- Click Save.
- Get Support: Contact your school’s Academic Technology Specialist or the Instructional Design team for help replacing or rethinking course materials that used Lucid.
