UNCG academic departments can now purchase and manage Meta Quest virtual reality (VR) headsets securely through ITS (Information Technology Services). This new service supports the University’s growing use of immersive learning technologies by providing a reliable, University-managed setup process for Meta Quest devices.
In Fall 2025, ITS implemented Meta Horizon Managed Services (HMS) — a platform that allows supported Meta Quest headsets to securely connect to the eduroam network and integrate with UNCG’s technology environment.
Who Benefits
This service is available to academic departments using University-owned Meta Quest VR headsets for:
- VR-integrated coursework
- Special projects (such as VR app development, 3D modeling, or design)
- Skills development and experiential learning opportunities
Note: Personally owned Meta headsets cannot be enrolled in UNCG’s Horizon Managed Services (HMS) environment.
Key Features
- Secure Connectivity: Headsets can connect to the eduroam network through HMS.
- Centralized Management: Each department’s devices are enrolled, configured, and managed in a secure University-managed platform.
- Dedicated Support: A designated Departmental Technology Support (DTS) staff member receives ITS training to manage departmental headsets.
- Lifecycle Tracking: Devices are tagged and tracked through UNCG’s ServiceNow inventory system.
How to Get Started
Departments interested in purchasing or enrolling Meta Quest headsets should:
- Complete the ITS Pre-Purchase Form to document the intended use and device request.
- Consult with ITS through the Campus Hardware Procurement (CHiP) Program for purchase review and approval.
- Purchase through CDW via SpartanMart after approval.
- New headsets must be purchased as a CDW bundle including a Meta device, warranty, and lifetime HMS services.
- Existing headsets may be added to HMS with a one-year HMS license from CDW.
- Submit the Service Catalog Form – Meta Quest VR Device Enrollment after purchase to initiate setup and configuration.
- Assign a Departmental Technology Support (DTS) contact. ITS will train the DTS to manage and support the devices.
