Who: Faculty and staff using Windows-based GCN (General Computing Network) computers.

What: Change in how Windows updates are delivered and managed.

When: Tuesday, August 12, 2025

Why: To modernize Windows update delivery, improve security, and offer more flexibility.

What’s Changing?

Starting Tuesday, August 12, UNCG will transition from using Application Catalog (AppCat) to Microsoft Intune with Windows Update for Business (WUfB) to manage Windows updates.

What This Means for You

  • Native Windows Update Experience:
You’ll now receive update notifications directly through the standard Windows interface, similar to personal Windows devices. You will have more control over when updates install and when your computer restarts to finish applying them. You can also pause updates for up to 30 days.
  • No More AppCat Prompts:
Updates will no longer be pushed or scheduled through AppCat.
  • Driver and Firmware Updates:
Your computer will begin receiving driver and firmware updates through the Windows Update experience. This ensures the hardware that makes your device run stays secure and up to date.
  • Improved Security and Flexibility:
This change enhances device security while reducing disruption to your work.

Do I Need to Do Anything?

No action is required. Simply watch for Windows update prompts and follow the on-screen instructions to install updates or restart your computer when notified.

Special Use Cases

  • Highly Managed Computers:
Approved special-use computers with custom update packages will continue to receive updates through AppCat without changes.
  • Labs and Classrooms:
Lab and classroom computers will continue updating and restarting automatically during off-hours.
