Who Is Affected?
Faculty who use Canvas’ Microsoft OneDrive LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability).
What’s Changing?
UNCG is transitioning from the classic Microsoft OneDrive LTI in Canvas to the OneDrive app within Microsoft Education in Canvas.
Microsoft is retiring the standalone OneDrive LTI as part of a broader effort to streamline multiple Microsoft tools in Canvas into a single, unified experience called Microsoft Education.
This change aligns with updates already completed at UNCG:
- Microsoft Meetings and Microsoft Classes have been retired
- Microsoft Education was launched in December 2025
Microsoft has created a transition tool that will be available by Fall 2026 to help move your existing OneDrive LTI content into the new experience. The tool is currently being tested.
Additional communication and step-by-step guidance will be shared once the transition tool is available.
Key Definitions
Microsoft OneDrive Canvas LTI (Current Tool): The existing OneDrive integration used to embed or link files in Canvas.
Microsoft Education OneDrive App (New Tool): A new OneDrive app built into the Microsoft Education tool in Canvas, providing a more unified experience.
Microsoft OneDrive Canvas Transition Tool: A Microsoft-provided tool that helps move your files and links from the old OneDrive LTI to the new OneDrive app.
How Does This Impact You?
If you previously used the OneDrive LTI in your Canvas courses, you will need to use the transition tool to ensure your content remains available.
How to Tell If You’ve Used OneDrive LTI
You may have used the OneDrive LTI if you:
- Embedded OneDrive files directly into Canvas pages, assignments, or discussions
- Used an External Tool labeled “OneDrive” when adding course content
- Linked to files through a OneDrive file picker inside Canvas
These are common examples, but there may be other ways the OneDrive LTI was used in a course. In some cases, you may have inherited a course that includes OneDrive LTI content.
Direct Outreach to Instructors
ITS has identified a list of Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 courses that Canvas indicates used the Microsoft OneDrive LTI.
Instructors of those courses will receive a direct email with guidance on what steps to take.
If you receive an email from ITS, your course(s) have been identified as using the OneDrive LTI.
When Is This Happening?
Summer 2026 (Testing Phase)
The Microsoft OneDrive LTI will continue operating in Canvas as usual.
During this time, ITS will:
- Test Microsoft’s transition tool
- Test the new OneDrive app in Microsoft Education
- Develop training and resources for the transition tool and new OneDrive app
You may temporarily see the OneDrive app appear in Microsoft Education during testing.
Fall 2026 (Full Transition)
- The OneDrive LTI will be disabled
- The OneDrive app in Microsoft Education will be fully enabled
ITS will:
- Share step-by-step guidance for using the transition tool
- Offer training opportunities for Microsoft Education
