UNCG has enabled Chrome Browser Profile Management for users who sign in to Google Chrome with their UNCG account.
A Chrome browser profile stores bookmarks, saved passwords, browsing history, extensions, and preferences associated with an account. With profile management enabled, Chrome recognizes profiles connected to UNCG accounts and allows ITS to apply settings or security controls when needed.
For most students, faculty, and staff, day-to-day browsing will not change.
Who Is Affected?
Students, faculty, and staff who sign in to Chrome with their UNCG account.
What’s Changing?
When you sign in to Chrome with your UNCG account, Chrome creates a university profile that can be managed separately from personal Chrome profiles.
The first time your UNCG Chrome profile is brought under management, you may see a Google-generated message stating “This profile will be managed.” You may also see “Managed by your organization” in Chrome. These messages are expected.
By default, no additional restrictions or controls are applied. Additional settings may be applied to specific groups of users who interact with sensitive university data or systems.
What’s Staying the Same?
For most users, Chrome will continue to work as it does today. Your bookmarks, extensions, settings, and everyday browsing experience will stay the same.
Your personal Chrome profiles remain separate from your UNCG profile and are not managed by UNCG. Personal browsing, bookmarks, passwords, and history remain separate from the UNCG profile.
When?
Chrome Browser Profile Management is now available at UNCG.
Users who already sign in to Chrome with a UNCG account may receive prompts to bring their UNCG profile under management.
What Do I Need to Do?
If Chrome prompts you that your UNCG profile will be managed, follow the on-screen prompts to continue.
