Overview
Apple has released macOS Tahoe (version 26.0). Information Technology Services (ITS) and the Mac Advisory Committee will begin evaluating the new operating system’s compatibility with UNCG enterprise applications and network configurations.
Who Is Affected
Faculty, staff, and students who use Mac devices managed by UNCG or connected to campus systems.
What’s Changing
Apple devices are now eligible to update to macOS Tahoe. As with past operating system (OS) releases, some applications may not work properly at launch.
Important Update Recommendations
- Wait to upgrade: ITS strongly recommends that you do not update your Mac to macOS Tahoe on the release day. Instead, wait until Apple releases the first significant update, version 26.1, usually available in mid to late October.
- Avoid minor “dot” updates: If Apple releases a small update like 26.0.1, continue postponing. These minor updates typically address small issues but are not enough to ensure full compatibility with key software.
Why We’re Not Blocking the Update
ITS will not block macOS Tahoe. This approach, adopted in recent years, is based on successful early testing of the last five major macOS releases. No significant issues have been detected during initial testing, which allows ITS to enable updates sooner than before.
Special Considerations for Adobe Users
If you use Adobe products such as Photoshop, InDesign, or Premiere Pro, it is especially important to wait until version 26.1 before upgrading. In previous years, Adobe software has experienced performance and stability issues before the .1 release of macOS.
If you use other specialized software, check the software vendor’s documentation for macOS Tahoe support or consult your Departmental Technology Support (DTS) staff before updating. If your department does not have a DTS, contact 6-TECH for guidance.
Microsoft Office Compatibility
Microsoft has confirmed that its Office suite will have full support on day one for macOS Tahoe.
